SNOW LATE AGAIN

February 25, 2025

As I write this, I am enjoying the snow we have been receiving. Of course, it causes problems: snow clearing, dirty cars, and slippery walks and roads that we have to think about when we’re out and about. It came very late again this year and is certainly welcomed by snowmobilers, skiers, and businesspeople. It’s…

CREATION CARE CORNER

February 25, 2025

This week, as we have been watching the Los Angeles wildfires in horror, we are being forcefully reminded of the consequences of our planet-warming activities. It’s as if God is pushing reality into our faces so we can’t think any longer that the consequences are somewhere off in the future. LA is the second largest…

What Can We Learn From Our Neighbors

December 27, 2024

We have family living in New Brunswick, on the east coast of Canada.  We drove there for a visit late in October 2024 and while we visited we learned a few things about how they handle their recycling.   When we were staying at a rental house, there were instructions about garbage and recycling.  Organic…

Hybrid vs. Electric Vehicles

November 27, 2024

Hybrid vs. Electric Vehicles An interesting fact has come to my attention. Toyota has been seen as falling behind other carmakers in transitioning to fully electric vehicles. However, this is probably intentional on Toyota’s part. Its focus is on mass deployment of hybrids to significantly reduce emissions. The carmaker believes that having large numbers of…

October 9, 2024

It is October already, and it will soon be time to vote in our state and national elections.  We want to remind you to vote and persuade your family members and friends to vote also.  There are many issues at stake, so if we want to see sensible solutions we will need to make our…

August 27, 2024

Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more articles and statements about the occurrence of climate change, as I’m sure you have also.  They have been in magazines, newspapers, on television news, television documentaries, and speakers on television and in person in our area.  It seems everyone who is honest with themselves understands that we have…

Creation Care Corner

The United Church of Christ Earth Summit was convened for the second time in April 2024.  The keynote speaker was Bill McKibben, who is well-known as one of the leading writers and speakers on climate change.  He wrote his first book on the subject in 1989.  He called the damage from carbon fuels the “greatest…

Creation Care Corner

July 2, 2024

As I write this on the first day of summer 2024, it’s becoming clear that many things climate-related are increasingly extreme this year.  It’s true that individual weather events and seasonal trends are not entirely due to climate change, but the frequency and severity of these events is.  A list of some of these things…

Plastics Part 2

May 31, 2024

This article is a follow-up to last month, which was about our plastic crisis – how much oil goes into producing millions of tons of plastic per year, and that it persists 500 years in nature. This month our focus is on the harm caused by the production of that plastic from oil. I attended…

Creation Care: Our Plastic Crisis

May 20, 2024

Plastic first started being created on a global scale in the 1950s.  Since then annual plastic production has exploded to an estimated 460 million tons as of 2019.  While plastic has many beneficial uses, single-use plastics have become a real environmental threat.  All manner of groceries and consumer goods come with plastic wrappings that ultimately…
